The Acdemic Bank of Credits (ABC)
ABC Account opening steps (from abc.gov.in)
What is ABC
The Ministry of Education in India has introduced ABC ID to manage student records in the form of credits digitally. This digital innovation of credit is extremely beneficial for students who want to change colleges or join higher education after dropping out. Because they can use these credits to get admission to a new college as they are stored in a secured database. The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is a digital platform that gives the following Benefits to Students:
  1.  Store credits earned throughout their academic career,
  2.  Transfer credits between institutions,
  3.  Redeem credits, and
  4.  Create a credit-based system that integrates their skills and experiences.
  5.  It allows multiple entry and multiple exit.
  6.  It improves transparency and helps to build a more flexible approach to curriculum design and development.

So, the ABC platform is an online system designed to store students' credit scores, similar to the National Academic Depository. Managed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, it allows students to create accounts with unique ABC IDs and use a dashboard to track their credits, transfer requests, and credit history. Students can easily request and monitor credit transfers, much like using a bank. In short, ABC simplifies the process of recognizing, transferring, and using academic credits. However, it accepts and validates credit documents submitted by the registered or authorized  Higher Education Institutions only that award them, not directly from students.
Students belonging to eligible Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) only, can avail the facility of ABC.

ABC Process in Brief
The credits earned by students are deposited in their ABC 'Academic Account' by their respective  HEIs. If the student moves to a different institution, the accumulated credits get transferred to the account of the new institution. Credits may be transferred from an institution to be accumulated in another programme offered by the same or another institution. Once the credit is redeemed for the award of the above, it is  irrevocably debited from the respective student's 'Academic Account' of ABC.

Credits are assigned to full courses or programs by the universities or institutions involved in the ABC scheme. Students can collect these credits to earn qualifications, as needed for their degree, or to keep a record of personal achievements for lifelong learning. Credits are given to students only after they complete the required activities and meet the set learning goals, which are proven through proper assessments.

What is an ABC ID Card?
The ABC ID card stores and saves information about the students in a digital format. This ID contains a unique 12-digit code issued to every college student. This ID stores information like certificates, diplomas, degrees training and co-curricular achievements.

The ABC ID connects students to their Digilocker account where student securely keep their important documents like exam marksheets. Institutions can access the academic credits of the students by student consent.
Having ABC ID is mandatory for a college / university student.

How ABC Works
1. Creating an ABC Account
College and university students are required to open an ABC Account using basic details like name, address, and course information. After creating the account, students receive their unique ABC ID and password to check their credits anytime.

2. Earning Credit
The government sets a credit system for various courses. When a student finishes a course and passes exams, a credit will be added to the ABC account by the institution / University

3. Checking and Transferring Credit
The ABC checks and verifies the credits earned by the students. If a student wants to transfer the credit they can use the ABC ID system easily.

4. Programs that ABC coveres
ABC coveres programs like online, and offline, including the distance learning program.

5. Validity of ABC Credits
Generally, the credits earned by the student will be valid for 7 years. It is important to learn that the validity of credit depends on the course. Whenever the change occurs, ABC will notify you. Students who have dropped out can use these credits to get admission to the new institution anytime during the 7-year valid period).

6.  All College / University / HEIs students are required to create their ABC account.

Did You Know What an Academic Credit is?

An Academic Credit is a standard way of measuring learning. It is based on one hour of theory or tutorial, or two hours of lab work per week over a semester (15–30 weeks), which equals one credit. Higher education institutions award these credits. For internships, one week equals one credit, up to a maximum of six credits. Universities or colleges assign credits to each subject or module when creating their syllabus.
